This is known as “decision weighting.” He adds that people also tend to have counterfactual thoughts \u2014 what would have happened if they had done something differently. In the case of the lottery, they might think, “Well, I don’t have a very high chance of winning, but somebody has to win.”<\/p>\n
Some lotteries are used for charitable purposes. For example, the National Basketball Association holds a lottery to determine which team gets first pick in the draft.
