How To: Change Your Carrier

iPod touch

iOS 4.3.x

1. SSH or iFile into your iPod touch

2. Navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/

3. Backup the original N81AP.plist

4. Open N81AP.plist

5. Change

<key>device-name</key>
<string>iPod</string>

to

<key>device-name</key>
<string>YOUR CARRIER HERE</string>

for example:

<key>device-name</key>
<string>PwnMyI<string>

6. Respring or reboot your iPod touch and take a look at your new carrier!

iOS 4.2.1

1. SSH or iFile into your iPod touch

2. Navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/

3. Backup the original N72AP.plist

4. Open N72AP.plist

5. Change

    Im in the Uk and am locked to 02. I have 4.3.1 firmware. If I do the above can I use my iphone with another provider on holiday in say Asia?

    You should really use a tweak like MakeItMine, FakeOperator, or FakeCarrier to change your carrier name, not editing these files directly. I find that FakeCarrier works well on iOS 4.2 and 4.3.

    (In these system files, that device-name value is used for multiple purposes within the system, including as part of your User Agent string when you’re browsing the web – which is a piece of information logged on the servers of the website you’re visiting. So, if you type your name into this .plist, your name will also show up in the logs of every website you visit with Mobile Safari, making you really easy to track and identify across the web.)
